Bev has launched a number of community-based initiatives. She is a co-founder of Belmont Against Racism, a nonprofit organization created in 1992 to promote awareness and dialogue about racism and build bridges to greater understanding. In 1994 she received a leadership award from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for anti-racism work in collaboration with the METCO program (Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity) and the public schools. Bev has served on the board of the First Church Unitarian Universalist in Belmont and prior to this, coordinated a $5 million church renovation and new building project that included a successful capital campaign. In 2007, she led a group to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to help prepare homes for rebuilding in the historically black community of Turkey Creek. Since then Bev has helped raise $1.3 million to support mental health services and summer camps for 3,000 children in this area devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
